The update to v3.0 is a major update, which is available for free for all Gladiator2 users. It includes a larger and resizeable GUI, a patch browser, enhanced sound quality, a bigger sonic range, a more user-friendly interface and many new features. Gladiator3 is downward compatible. Existing song-projects and patches can be loaded without any further steps necessary. They will benefit from the enhanced sound quality.

New features:

- Created a new interface, which is nearly twice as large
- By clicking on 'EDITOR SIZE' you can select from four different interface sizes
- Added a comfortable, new patch browser
- New sound-quality mode 'high-end'
- Added context sensitive tooltips with detailed descriptions for all controls
- The patches can be ranked by clicking on the stars in the patch browser
- The patch rankings are stored within the file "Ranking.rnk"
- 6 additional lfo waveforms: "Stair 4 up","Stair 8 up","Stair 4 down","Stair 8 down","Stair 4 up/down","Stair 8 up/down"
- Added handbooks in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian to the new help menu
- New loop mode "Noise", which jumps to a random section
- New loop mode "\/50%", which ping-pong-loops 50% of the spectrum
- New loop mode "\/25%", which ping-pong-loops 25% of the spectrum
- 3 additional phase-modifiers "Zzzap", which sound like a laser
- 3 additional phase-modifiers "Boing", which sound like a reverse laser
- 2 additional phase-modifiers "Odd noise" and "Even noise", which noisify the spectrum
- 2 additional phase-modifiers "Odd 90" and "Even 90", which sound like a sub-oscillator
- Information tags about the patches are shown in the patch browser
- Extended halftone-range for the arpeggiator from -23 to +23
- Added cross-product-compatibility: Save->'Export...' exports the sound of osc1 as an Icarus compatible wavetable in wav format
- Video tutorials can be shown from the help menu
- Updates and additional sounds can be accessed directly from the help menu

Enhancements in sound:

- More linear frequency response for oscillators playing below 100Hz
- More precise timing for all sample-rates
- Replaced all micro-tuning algorithms with a better ones. The new ones are more subtle and sounds less 'detuned'.
- The late-reverb-tail of 'Reverb small' sounds less detuned
- The late-reverb-tail of 'Reverb large' sounds less detuned
- The late-reverb-tail of 'Reverb ultra' sounds less detuned
- All effects do come with default settings now and are more useable

Enhancements for the interface:

- Re-rendered the old GUI with sharper texts
- The envelope's attack, decay, and release time is displayed in seconds
- Registration screen is now also available in German
- Renaming a preset is more straightforward
- The version number now can be also shown from within help menu
- The updated credits can be shown by clicking on help menu
- The parameter info display is able to show longer texts now
- Mousewheel support for knobs and list selectors
- Double-clicking a knob or slider resets it to the default value
- More detailed spectrum display
- Better init patch
- Enhanced graphics
- Added messages boxes with info for some possible errors
- Many smaller enhancements

Changes:

- Loading and saving banks can now be accessed with a new menu called 'load' and 'save'
- Renamed some parameters to be more consistent with the industry standards
- Updated some texts

Fixes:

- The timing in 44Khz and 48Khz could have been out-of-sync if large block-sizes were used
- Fixed some typos
- Fixed a couple of wrong pixels
- Fixed a possible bug with 'static' loop mode
- Compatibility fix for the 'm' key
- Fixed a possible crash when the splash-screen was opened during closing

Thank you! I just made a quick test and its running fine so far. The bigger UI is really great! Patch browsing is so much fun now. But maybe there should be a warning for new customers: Although the patchbrowser looks like from the newer synths, the behaviour is different (due to the sound file format): when I change a sound, IT STAYS CHANGED even without saving. So, if you want to use a sound as a base for something new, you better save that base sound first!

Little thing: the X (for exit) in the patchbrowser is very dark and hard to see. I also managed, by rezing the patchbrowser window to almost having the X disappeared. In your other synths, this is called EXIT, maybe this would also be better for Gladiator and it would give a bigger area for the mouse.

Cheers

Dumbo

P.S.
Thank you very much for the "missing" halftones! Very much appreciated!!! :)

It looks fantastic.
Are the coloured skins gone or will they be back in the future.
Was trying to get back my red but changing skin.txt value doesn't seem to have an effect.

Interesting it has red at two sizes but grey at the other two sizes.

Also using Steinberg's save default preset technique only works properly at full size....... if I save a default preset at one of the smaller gui's like before I get a whole heap of white space.

For whatever reason Pads: PA Phasor Gator AVB has been saved at Master Volume 0 so it is very very low in volume (not mute though strangely) since we can't resave the factory banks could you amend this please.
thanks

I recreated the "disappeared" X:
PC/win 8.1 / Gladiator3 32 bit standalone: After opening Gladiator, setting to big size and closing, next time opening, the patch browser does not open fully extended (the grey windows bars are at the right side and the bottom) and the X is not visible anymore.

Such a lovely update. Great new UI (but really. So much better this way), i LOVE the export wavetable function and the new way of saving/opening presets + browser. BIG thumbs up!

Thank you for your reports and your feedback.

Exactly.

when I change a sound, IT STAYS CHANGED even without saving.
As you already metioned Gladiator uses a different patch system as the other synths. It uses one large glb file which stores all patches instead of many small fxp files.
If you press the reset button the factory settings of the patch are restored.

Quote
we can't resave the factory banks

This is possible. The factory sounds are stored in the glb file withing Gladiator_data. You can overwrite it, but i recommend to create a backup first.

Thanks. I will fix it.

Was trying to get back my red but changing skin.txt value doesn't seem to have an effect.

They are still here. But only if you still use the small editor size.
They will not be re-rendered for the large one. Reason: It would need pretty much additonal RAM, which is rare on 32bit hosts. Furthermore the dll would get pretty large, which mean slower loading times.

Can you explain this more detailed please? What does this fuction do?

PC/win 8.1 / Gladiator3 32 bit standalone: After opening Gladiator, setting to big size and closing, next time opening, the patch browser does not open fully extended (the grey windows bars are at the right side and the bottom) and the X is not visible anymore.

It is not a bug in the Gladiator plugin itself, it is a bug in the standalone host (Gladiator.exe alias Freebiehost). Freebiehost was programmed by Michael Loeffel. I am not sure if i can solve it, since the source code is lost. In the worst case we have to kick the standalone.

Best Regards,
Markus

Hi Markus,
Steinberg's default preset:
You configure a plugin exactly like you want it to default to.
Be it GUI for those that offer Gui Sizes and Tabs, Default sound/effect preset, HQ on/off for those plugin that have a High Quality Function, MultiCore on/Off for those plugins that allow, Oversampling on/off and value for those plugin that allow it.
Once you have configured that plugin how you want, top of the plug in bar, right click and say Save as Default.
So from henceforth every instance of that plugin you ever use, will start off with your default parameters configured above.

"In the worst case we have to kick the standalone."
Nonono  :o it is not a showstopper. There are still some pixels where you can see the X and you can even click it. The other option is to resize the gui by dragging the lower right corner.
If the clickable area of the X (in your other progs called "EXIT" (hint hint  :P) was a little bit broader, it would be no problem at all, only a slightly cosmetic one...

Cheers

Thank you for your bug reports.

Good news: The beta seems to be stable. Furthermore I think i was able to solve all issues that you reported. The next beta will include these fixes:

- MasterVolume did not go down to 0
- The volume of the patch 'PA Phasor Gator' was too low
- Fixed wrong text 'The version number of Icarus..."
- Workaround for a window resizing problem in Cubase after 'save default preset'
- Workaround for a window resizing problem in Standalone/FreebieHost

You been busy.
Thanks Markus.
Btw, I did try to fix the PA patch low volume myself by resaving the factory.glb.... Fortunately i took your advice and made a backup before because the saved version played three patches fine then starting a monopitch alarm type sound :).
This was mac sierra.
I dumped that factory and went back to the original one and all is good now.
thanks

I load vstxml for very old Gladiator 2.2 with all names:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/a9nyb1a2iw3jfiq/GL_v2.2.vstxml?dl=0

In some last versions Gladiator not have names :(

Amazing update!! Thanks for keeping this old beast going strong.

Haven't used Gladiator in a long time for sound design so this "bug report" may be bogus but I thought I'd write it anyway.

the Filter Envelope (possibly others too) is behaving very strangely when the Shape parameter is set to fully linear (12 o'clock). The attack cycle never reaches it's target when set to longer attack times. It seems like the sustain FADE part is taking over before the whole attack/decay cycle is complete.

Now that I think about this.. I think this may be the original behavior but it's still very weird and makes it difficult to make very slow evolving pad sounds.

Would it be possible to fix this? Shouldn't affect too many presets as very few seem to use extreme extended attack and decay times.

Anyhow, cheers for the superb update. The beta has been very stable for me today while working with it all morning.

Found a bug in the latest beta here. If I switch between effect types using the drop down menu, they load with usable configurations. If I switch between effect types using the up and down arrows on the GUI, then the effects load up with all three settings knobs (mix, parameter 1, and parameter 2) turned to 100%.

Let me know if you have trouble understanding what I'm describing here.
