Filter-cutoff with key-tracking

Dear folks,

I simply do not succeed to get a deep growling pad sound that I can also use for chords (with simple 1-3-voicings) without getting bass mud.

The preset "Hyper Stereo Pad" playing a melody between E2 (82,41 Hz) and E3 (164,81 Hz) with a Cutoff at 959 and Drive at 20 (and no FX) is pretty much the sound I am looking for.

The problem: playing the melody higher goes along with a loss of depth and growl, but keeping it that low does not work with an additional voice underneath playing thirds/sixths without getting bass mud.

No wonder for my piano teacher always told me: Lower than C3 (131 Hz) only bass notes! 

How would you solve the problem?

Is it possible at all to make Icarus produce a sound that is both dark and growling and still transparent enough for 1-3-voicings?

( By reducing the "overtone chord" the "Hyper Stereo Pad"-Preset produces - or by somehow adding darkness and growl so that it works and octave higher? )

Hello Heiner,

next to the Cutoff-knob is a knob called 'KEY'. Set it to 75. Then the cutoff will follow the key you are currently playing. High keys will sound more bright while low ones will sound more dark.

Thank you very much, Markus - yesterday evening I experimented using two instances of Icarus each one playing only one of the chord voices and then putting a high cut on the lower one - the cutoff key follow feature seems to do pretty much that - except that it adapts the high cut to every single key played which is more precise / better of course.

Now in case that the cutoff key follow even at 100 is not radical enough I still can split the voices and adjust the key follow for each voice / instance separately.

Hello Heiner,

you can also try this:

- Open the filter completely (set cutoff to 22050 Hz)
- In OSC 1 set Morph to 6 to remove all higher partials

If my first attempts with partial reduction (reduction of the partials  ;D) of the lower voice do not mislead me, it seems to be the most effective way to avoid bass mud. I will experiment further with a combination of partial reduction, cutoff key follow and general cutoff. Thanks a lot so far!

- go to the 'EQUALIZER'
- set 'LOW' to '200 Hz cut'

That LowCut helps too, I'd say.

For now my favorite solution is:
Two Instances playing unisono the "melody" / the desired bass move, one in octave 1, the other in octave 2. A third instance plays the thirds hardly noticable above that also in octave 2. So in a way that confirms the rule ;-)

The lowest instance / Octave 1:
- LowCut 100 Hz
- Morph 6 to reduce the higher partials
- Cutoff 1kHz
- Osc1 Detune 34
no Drive, no DBassBoost

Middle instance / Ocatve 2:
- Cutoff 1kHz
- Osc1 Detune 32
no Drive, no DBassBoost, no LowCut, no Morph

Top instance /Octave 3:
- LowCut 200 Hz
- Cutoff 826 Hz
- Drive 10
- Osc1 Detune 28
no DBassBoost, no Morph
