resynthesis
« on: October 08, 2010, 06:01:52 PM »
When Gladiator 2 was first introduced, it had a "resynthesis" button.
What's the plans on adding this in a future update.
I really liked the fact that this would be possible, and one of the reasons I purchased G2.
I think you owe it to us, you can't advertise it, and don't implement it...

Hello Phy6,

Several hundred resynthesis and vocoder sounds are already included in the current version.
Approximately 40% of the Gladiator patches are based on wavetables which have been created by resynthesis or the HCM vocoder. The resynthesis sounds are limited to playback and can also be manipulated with the modifiers. This gives a huge sonic range and is part of the HCM synthesis concept. You can find them in the categories OR, PE, PI, BR, GT, VO.

Some example sounds that show you can do vocoder or resynthsis sounds are found in the basic version of Gladiator:

Tutorial patches: -> Vocoder 1-3
Tutorial patches: -> Resynthesis 1-2

Tutorial patches: -> Vocoder 1-3
Tutorial patches: -> Resynthesis 1-2

-------------------------
The original resynth button was reserved for a future expansion, the idea being import and resynthesis of custom waveforms. It has been removed since some customers missunderstood our specification of features and we have been running into technical problems when we tried to implement it:

1) Some hosts were not able to handle this feature properly.
2) It didn't sound good enough for the high expectations in sound quality that our customers have.
3) It is very difficult to handle.
4) It works properly only on a small set of sounds.
5) Necessary changes in the preset format would lead to incompatibility with excisting songs or patches.
6) Not many people requested this feature.

Since we didn't want to disappoint our customers with an expansion that does not work as expected we decided to spend more time on research to provide a properly working product. We will release a commercial expansion if we are able to solve the technical problems and as soon as we are 100% satisfied with the quality.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However we do not want to disappoint anyone and hold our promises. That's why we will give our own internal resynthesis tool as freeware. It allows you to import a wav file and create a custom waveform (mf2 file). Please note this:

- The utility is PC only
- We do not provide support for this utility
- The software is provided "AS IS" and to be used at your own risk.

- Results may vary, not all wave material is suitable for HCM
- The utlility only works with 16 bit mono wave files (default header)
- The sounds must have a wavelength of 256 samples
- Some wave material will crash the utility, note that extra header information could be a cause for this

It will be available in the goodies section of this forum in a week.

Best Regards,
Markus Feil

Ye, I've always found non-content specific resynthesizing to be lacking... even in things like IL Morphine and CA Alchemy. It's ok... alright, it's good. Amazing. Erm, no. You really need to hand pick the material to be resynthed quite pedantically... some things just don't resynth good...
