I have been exploring the new additive oscillator modes in Icarus 3 and noticed some confusion regarding the stereo counterparts to the mono modes. The pairs that sound identical are as follows:
- Add Bell 4 - Add Stereo Bell 8
- Add Bell 8 - Add Stereo Bell 16
- Add Partials 2 - Add Stereo Par 4
- Add Partials 4 - Add Stereo Par 8
- Add Partials 8 - Add Stereo Par 16
Based on this pattern, there seems to be no stereo counterpart for Add Bell 16 and Add Partials 16. Additionally, there is no mono counterpart for Add Stereo Bell 4. Could you please clarify why the matching numbers in mono and stereo modes do not sound the same? Why are some pairs missing? I would appreciate a detailed explanation to better understand this. Thank you!
The stereo modes play the same tuning of partials but with different phase. A stereo osciallor technically consists of 2 mono osciallators. The number is the technically playing oscillators. "Add Stereo Par 16" plays 8 oscs on the left and 8 oscs on the right.
8 left+8 right=16 stereo
Thanks for your fast reply. What's theoretically still missing in that list now would be Add Bell 2, Add Stereo Bell 32 and Add Stereo Par 32. Will they be implemented later in an update?
Add Bell 2 would be too similar sounding to several other modes. Apart from this you could also just use two sine OSCs instead.
The 32 partials a CPU hog. It is possible for the future when CPUs are faster.
